Lawrence S. Carlton, M.D.
Lawrence S. Carlton, M.D., passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the McLean Health Center in Simsbury, surrounded by his family. He was born August 10, 1924 in Windsor, CT, where he grew up. He graduated from the Loomis School in 1942 and received a full-tuition scholarship to Harvard College. He married Margaret (Peg) Boody September 7, 1947. He graduated cum laude from Harvard in 1948, following three years served in the CBI Theater in WWII in India and China. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1952 and then spent one year at Hartford Hospital on a rotating internship and a year as resident in medicine. In 1953 he became a Diplomate, American Board of Medical Examiners. He and Peg moved to Canton in 1954, where he began his family practice of medicine. In 1968 Dr. Carlton began work as the Director, Student Health Center, at Hartford Hospital, and in 1974 became Physician-Coordinator of the Nurse Practitioner Program until that program came to an end in 1981. Until 1983 he served as Coordinator of Education in Ambulatory Medicine, Department of Medicine, at Hartford Hospital. In 1983 he became the first Medical Director of Quality Assurance, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. Dr. Carlton was pre-deceased by his son Thomas and his two sisters, Phyllis Edgerton and Constance Cobb. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Peg, their three daughters and their spouses, Katherine and Thomas Pickrell of Canton, Betsy and Rob Knox of Upton, MA and Nancy and Jimmy Benoit of Aquinnah, Martha’s Vineyard, MA; daughter-in-law, Mary Carlton of Stem, NC; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. He spent his last years pursuing his many interests--local history, seafaring, whaling, photography, serving as docent and teacher of docents at the Canton Historical Museum, church historian of the Canton Center Congregational Church, worldwide travel and presentation of lectures and shows to various groups. He never tired of gaining new knowledge and sharing it with others. Calling hours will be at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike in Canton on Friday, October 19th from 4-8 p.m. A memorial service will be at the Canton Center Church, 184 Cherry Brook Road in Canton Center on Saturday, October 20th at 11:00 a.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the First Congregational Church of Canton Center, P.O.
