Obituary for Frank L. Croce Jr.

Frank L. Croce Jr.
Frank Louis Croce Jr., 81, of Simsbury, beloved husband of Arline (Sivertsen), died peacefully in the comfort of his home on April 10, 2017, following a bout with cancer. Frank was born on December 5, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest son of Frank and Anne Croce. Raised in Glen Head, Long Island, he graduated from Roslyn High School in 1953. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and was deployed to Germany where he served as an Aircraft Mechanic, an experience that provided him with many fond memories of comrades, German beer and wonderful food. Returning home, he took advantage of the GI Bill, first enrolling in Embry-Riddle, at that time a two-year college in Miami, Florida. Frank received his Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Indiana Institute of Technology, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Frank then began his career at Hamilton Standard, a Division of United Aircraft, as a Field Service Representative. This took him and his family to assignments in Texas, back to Indiana, Georgia, and Florida. He retired from Hamilton Standard after forty years of service, later returning to work for Belcan for four years. Frank enjoyed spending winter weekends skiing with his wife and the gang at Horseshoe Acres in Vermont, and summers sailing on their beloved boat, Rubicon. Many close, lifelong friends were made on adventures that included skiing in Colorado and Europe and plying the waters of New England. With a mooring at Block Island, this became their summer "home away from home." After retirement, he and Arline built a new home in Ellington. Frank learned to love the game of golf, first while on assignment on the Apollo program, which led them to winter in Myrtle Beach for several years. There, he honed his game while enjoying the company of friends from the North and the new ones made there. A member of the Hamilton "Living Legends" golf league, he lived for the Thursday tournaments and the challenges of the many courses they played around the area, and he was honored with the Sid Levine Award from his peers. Once Frank and Arline moved back to Simsbury, the Farms golf course became his new home away from home. When not on the golf course playing with his Powder Forest neighbors and friends, he kept busy in the yard, fixing sprinkler heads, mulching common areas and seeing that things were taken care of. In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by his three beloved daughters, Cathy Tower and her husband James of Suffield, Laura Stark and her husband Charles of Somers, and Susan Cormier and her husband Michael of Somers; his seven grandchildren, Jennifer Tower (Jason Kriksciun) of Newington, Michael Tower (Samantha) of Newington, Greg Tower (Kaitlynn Morgan) of Branford, Matthew Stark and Alexa Stark of New York City, Luke Cormier and Liza Cormier of Somers and his great-grandson Norman James Tower. He also leaves his brothers Richard and Fred Croce (Denise) of Long Island, New York, as well as many nieces. He was predeceased by his father, Frank Croce and mother, Anne (Malec). The family would like to express their thanks for the care and dedication of his doctors, Wagner, Kamradt, and Vichot; the staff at Hartford Hospital and the Gray Cancer Center; and the caring help and support of the staff at the Farmington Valley Visiting Nurses Association who kept him comfortable during his last days. A private celebration of Frank's life will be held with military honors at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Farmington Valley Visiting Nurses Association, 8 Old Mill Lane, Simsbury, CT 06070, or the Simsbury Land Trust, 800 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT 06070.
