Condolence: Steen family- I am so truly and deeply sorry for your loss. I just found out this week about Doug's passing and can not imagine what you all must be going through. I know that we have never met, but I knew your son very well. He was one of my best and dearest friends in college, and I loved him very much. Doug was ever the honest, caring, and gentle person, and he touched my life so deeply. I am so sad to have missed the service, but will drive to Connecticut at the first opportunity to pay my respects. Please know how much your son was loved, and truly touched my life, and all who he met. He was the best man I've ever known. My thoughts and prayers to you all.

Condolence From: Meri Nordstrom & Noubar, and Travis Stone
Condolence: On our drive tonight to the fencing club: I just found out. Earlier: I was puzzled and annoyed that Travis was being so evasive about the prom: I thought he blew it by not asking Erika months earlier. He finally said that something has come up, and, she just can't - and, for me to drop it and to let it rest. Yet, he was not angrily snapping at me - there was an air of unusual melancholy in his usual laconic attitude. Never in my thoughts did I expect that the tragedy of losing Doug so suddenly, was the insurmountable grief that has stricken Erika, you, Brenda, and Lloyd. Meeting Doug at the fencing club, I admired his attention and regard for his sister, driving her home after another long night of fencing. He seemed to be a very loving brother. There was a goodness and reverence in his demeanor that I have seen in all you. Oh, my dear new friends! We want to hold you in our arms to make these painful days go by. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you...if you want to walk in the woods with the dogs, take Erika somewhere with us ...we are close by, as you know. Travis knows that death is a lonely situation, and, he would be honored to support Erika in any way she wants. The heartbreak, my dear friends, is so enormous, but maybe the memories that you carry in your souls will slowly soothe this epic loss of a child. We think about you three with heavy hearts, and hope earnestly, that you will survive this and try to piece things together one by one knowing that your beloved son touched many lives.

Condolence: Lloyd, Brenda and Erika, It' almost impossible to find adequate words to express my condolences to you. I can remember pushing Douglas and Megan with Brenda in strollers on Lavander Road. Although I hadn't seen him in many, many years, I remember him as a kind young boy and you should be proud that you raised him so well. I know for a fact that you put your hearts and souls into raising him into a wonderful young man. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you constantly as you go through this indescribably difficult time. Please take care!

Condolence: Steen Family, Sending my most dear condolences. I love Doug as a brother. I was just recently speaking with a Hyde Alum that Doug's memory is so vivid in our mind. He was always so warm and caring, there was no person at Hyde with the ability to brighten my day like Doug. He was one of few people I can remember throughout my entire life that would take the time to sit down and just talk about anything that was wrong. He cared deeply for his friends. He was one of my best friends. My heart aches for him, and my heart goes out to your family. I can not express enough how I wish only for one more hug from him. More more conversation in front of the gym. Watch him play soccer one more time. He touched my heart, and impacted my life in such a way I could never forget. May he rest in peace. I love you Dougie.

Condolence From: Dan Murphy
Condolence: Brenda, Lloyd and Erika, Having known you all since that first summer in Summer Challenge at Hyde, Doug's loss is very tough to absorb. His delightful personality and love of life were evident right from the start! His stubborn nature often got him into hot water, but his tenacity also served him well as he steamrolled many challenges! Doug will now be forever young, diving for soccer balls, wrestling and knocking people down in lacrosse. As a parent I am crushed to even imagine feeling the pain that you are feeling. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Dan and all the Murphys

Condolence From: The Castellani Family
Condolence: Dear Steen Family, To say Doug was an amazing guy would be a severe understatement, so let's just say your son brought a lot of light and laughter into the lives of me and my family, and he will be dearly missed. I think it's safe to say we all thought of Doug as part of the family and loved him dearly. From cooking up the famous "Steen Steak," to playing basketball with my little brother outside, Doug was always kind, funny and gentle. For me, this loss has been particularly pronounced, as I considered Doug one of my closest friends in High School. Though college made it difficult to keep in touch, I thought (and will continue to think) of Doug often, remembering the movies we watched, the pool playing in my basement and most fondly, the time Doug came ballroom dancing with me and my family. What a night that was and what a sport Doug was for putting up with such an insane family event! I can safely say that no other guy I know would take the dance floor with my Mother with as much gusto as Doug displayed that night. He was truly one-of-a-kind and will be sorely missed by us all. I am thinking of you all constantly and hope you are doing the best you can during such a sad time. Though I am not a particularly religious person, I am confident Doug will out live us all through the mark he made during his time on Earth. There are only a handful of people you meet in this world with the charismatic spark Doug had, and I consider myself forever lucky to have known him. I miss you Doug. Rest in peace, my dear, dear friend. Sincerely, Rebecca Castellani and the Castellani Family (Helen, David and Michael)

Condolence: Brenda and Lloyd - I am deeply saddened by this tragic news. Some of my fondest memories as a soccer coach revolve around the sprawling, cat-like saves your son made each time he stepped out on the soccer pitch. Your son was a fierce competitor and led his life with a similar passion and tenacity. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
