Obituary for William John Young

William John Young, Jr., 87, of Simsbury, passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at McLean Village surrounded by the love of his family. Bill was born April 20, 1925, the second child of the late William John Young, Sr. and Margaret (Groetzinger) Young in Philadelphia, PA. He grew up on “The Main Line” with his sisters and many cousins and spent every summer in Ocean City, NJ. After graduating from Haverford High School in 1943, he went to the University of Pennsylvania in the Navy’s V-12 educational program. Before he could complete his education he was called up to serve as a Radioman 3rd Class in the Philippines from 1944-1946 and was honored with the Air Medal for his meritorious achievement. Bill returned to college at Gettysburg College where he completed an Economics Degree and met his future wife Phyllis Fraleigh. Bill’s sense of fun and ability to tell a great joke was his hallmark throughout his career. He worked for Penn Mutual, Fidelity Mutual, Continental Illinois Bank and Trust, finally ending as a Bond Trader for Aetna. He and Phyllis retired to Lake Wylie, SC in 1985 where they enjoyed many years of golf and travel around the world One of his greatest pleasures was enjoying the family lake house in Raymond, ME. After his wife passed away, he returned to Simsbury in 2009. Bill was predeceased by his wife Phyllis, his sisters, Ruth and Lynn and his sons, John Phillip and David William. He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia VanInwagen of Granby and her children Emilie and Chad; Suzanne Townsend of Aberdeen, Scotland, her husband Phil and their children, David, Benjamin and Jessica. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held Tuesday, November 13th, 3:30 PM in the Carling Chapel at McLean, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to South Congregational Church of Granby, 242 Salmon Brook Street, Granby, CT 06035 or to the P.E.O.
