Obituary for Alfred F. Ash

Print
Alfred F. Ash, 100, of Simsbury, beloved husband of Lucinda (Converse) Ash, died Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. He was born November 3, 1917 in New York, NY, son of the late Jacob and Rose (Frank) Ash, and had lived in Rye, NY prior to moving to Simsbury 12 years ago. Alfred was a 1938 graduate of Swarthmore College and subsequently received his Master's Degree in Architecture from Columbia University. During WWII he worked on structural design at Chance-Vought Aircraft in Stratford. Mr. Ash was an Architect with Mueller & Ash for most of his career prior to his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation and was enthusiastic about the discussions and fellowship he found there. After his wife and family, music was his second love. He was an accomplished cellist, having played from age 12 through age 96, and concentrating on chamber music. Growing up in New York City he played with the Juilliard High School Orchestra and later with the Columbia Student Orchestra. Alfred's cello teacher, Evsei Beloussoff, had studied under one of the finest Russian cello teachers and escaped Russia on a train after a performance during the Revolution with just his cello and the clothes on his back. In recent years Alfred took particular joy in attending and supporting the Hartford Symphony Masterworks concerts. Alfred maintained an active workout routine and attributed his longevity to daily exercise. Besides his wife of 68 years, he is survived by his children, Daniel Ash and his wife Lorraine of Ossining, NY, Elizabeth (Betsy) Ash and her husband Philip Doyle of Canton, Lucinda Ash Carter and her husband John of La Mesa, CA, and Margaret Ash Lisansky and her husband Eugene of St. Petersburg, FL; four grandchildren, Sylvia Doyle of El Portal, CA, Randall Doyle of Seattle, WA, Lucinda Carter of Nashua, NH, and Sarah Carter of Gresham, OR. He was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Ash, a former teacher at Ethel Walker School. There are no calling hours. A Memorial service will be celebrated, Monday, October 8th at 11:00 A.M. at The Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Hartford Symphony, HSO Development Department, 166 Capitol Ave., Hartford, CT 06106, and mention his name. Please visit Alfred's "Book of Memories" at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online condolences.
