Obituary for Anastasia Kalvoda (Citajevs)

Anastasia Kalvoda died October 28, 2018. She was a native of Latvia, where she was an elementary school teacher. She came to the US in 1949 from a refugee camp in the American zone in Germany. In the US, Anastasia received her BA degree in biology and a minor in chemistry at Hunter College of the University of the City of New York. Anastasia got her MT, fifth year Medical Technology training at St. Barnabas Hospital, Bronx, NY. Later she received an MA in biology/biochemistry at San Diego State University. Her original lab research for her MA thesis was presented at the Mycology (study of fungi) Convention in 1966. She also received her 6th year teacher’s certificate at the University of Hartford. Anastasia worked as Medical Technologist at several hospitals. She did research at Scripps Institute in La Jolla, CA and taught general biology and bacteriology course at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. In 1968 she became a biology teacher at Regional High School #7, Winsted, CT. She introduced elective courses in physiology for high school seniors, and microbiology for gifted juniors. Two of the gifted students participated in the CT Science Fair. One received a blue ribbon and the second got a trophy. Anastasia received the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1983.
Anastasia met her husband, Josef Kalvoda at Hunter College. He was a political refugee from Czechoslovakia. They were married in 1956. Josef obtained his MA and Ph.D. in public law and government at Columbia University. Dr. Kalvoda was a professor and also chairman of the Political Science Department at St. Joseph College, West Hartford, CT. He died in 1999.
There are no calling hours. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 6th at the Church of Saint Ann, 289 Arch Road in Avon. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Avon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph College, West Hartford.
