Obituary for Nadgy Verrillo (Shishko)

Nadgy Shisko Verrillo

Feb. 9, 1918 - Oct. 21, 2018

Nadgy Verrillo, who lived in Simsbury, Connecticut for 64 years passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, October 21, 2018.

Nadgy was born in New York City in 1918, grew up in Eastford, Connecticut, and married Albert Verrillo after he returned from military service during World War II. They moved to Simsbury in 1954 with the first of their three children, settling in the Green Acres neighborhood where they remained throughout their married life.

Nadgy adored people of all ages, especially children. There are several generations of Simsbury residents whom she cared for and mentored over the years, instilling in them a sense of curiosity and personal strength. She deeply touched the lives of the many friends she made along life’s path. Nadgy was a prolific letter writer and maintained correspondences with her many friends throughout the world.

Over the years she and her husband Albert hosted exchange students and enjoyed the arts, theater and travel. She loved reading and prided herself in knowing local birds by sight and sound as well as the names of most native plants.

Mrs. Verrillo adored horticulture and the natural world and for many years was active in the Simsbury Horticultural Society. She filled her yard with the plants she loved and continued to tend her garden well into her 90’s. She was also a regular sponsor of the Simsbury Flower Bridge and donor to Elizabeth Park in Hartford. Nadgy was a long-time member of St. Alban’s Episcopal church, where she often arranged flowers for Sunday services, special occasions and holidays. She lived independently after Albert died in 2009, moving to the McLean Home when she lost her vision due to macular degeneration.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Verrillo, who for many years managed Putnam Tennis Courts; her sister Jenny Shisko Owens of Eastford, Connecticut; her brother William Shishko; and her daughter Nadya Alexander.

She is survived by her sons, Noel Verrillo (Candace) of San Diego, California and Mark Verrillo (Susan Kromka) of Los Angeles, California.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday November 17th at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Simsbury. Please visit Nadgy’s “Book of Memories” at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes.
