Obituary for Michael Arden Platner

Print
Michael Arden Platner, 72, died unexpectedly on November 18, 2018, while at home with his wife, Fran. He and Fran met in 1966 and have been together ever since, celebrating 47 years of marriage last February. Mike was born in Hartford, Connecticut on April 16, 1946, the son of Arden and Anne Platner of Simsbury. He graduated from A.I. Prince Technical High School in Hartford and attended the University of Hartford.
Mike loved his family and was supportive of his wife and daughter’s many escapades, even though as a result he was often tasked with taking care of the dogs. He could fix or build anything and liked nothing more than solving problems and fixing things on his own. Mike loved gardening and spent a great deal of time and effort trying to protect his fruit trees from the local deer, coyotes and bears. He was president of Old New-gate Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving history and providing hands-on experiences to the public. Mike enjoyed his time as Business Manager with the Marquis of Granby Junior Ancient Fyfe and Drum Corps and found great satisfaction through his involvement in the New-Gate Halloween events at Old Newgate Prison and Copper Mine. He was a potter, and thoroughly enjoyed time spent working with friends at Expressions Pottery in East Granby. Mike loved all things Irish, particularly the music, and cherished the times he was able to visit Ireland. He liked to travel, however was happiest at home with his family and pets. He loved his dog Duncan, and his four-legged granddaughter, Quinn. He said he only tolerated the cats, but was secretly fond of them. He loved playing cards with friends and could be quite the trickster; he often surprised his family and friends with his offbeat, quirky sense of humor.
Mike is survived by wife Fran of North Granby and daughter Melissa of New Hartford, Mike’s brother Derrick and his wife, Laura of Simsbury and their children Jessie, Evangeline, and Ricky, niece Cheryl Dean, nephews Wally Dean and Scott Stanhope, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Ann Goldman, and nephew, Bailey Stanhope.
The Reverend Timothy J. Squier, Ph.D. celebrates Mike’s life at a memorial service on Tuesday, November 27 at 6:00 pm at Old Saint Andrews Episcopal Church at 59 Tariffville Road, Bloomfield, CT. A reception at the church will follow the service.
Anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory can do so to the Farmington Valley VNA at 8 Old Mill Lane, Simsbury, CT 06070. Please specify that it should go to the Granby Food Bank. Donations can also be made to the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation through their website: . The Vincent Funeral Home of Simsbury is caring for the arrangements.
