Obituary for Mary L. Jennison (Lowe)

Print
Mary “Sue” (Lowe) Jennison, wife of the late Whitney Jennison, passed away peacefully at her home in the McLean Assisted Living facility, Simsbury, CT, on November 22, 2018.
Sue was born in Lafayette, IN on November 9, 1925. She was the oldest of four siblings born to Harry and Maude Lowe. Sue attended Hood College, Frederick, MD, and later attended Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, where she received her nursing degree. It was during her college years, that she met the love of her life, Whitney Jennison, a midshipman at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. Upon graduation, they married in June of 1949. Following a tour of duty, spanning both coasts and the Hawaiian Islands, they arrived in New London, CT. Planning to start a family, they eventually settled in North Canton, CT in 1953, purchasing a historic home ca. 1760, which they renovated. It was here that they raised their 5 children. Sue was employed by the Canton Public Schools as the head school nurse, a position she held for 22 years (1968-1990). During these years, she would spend summers on Nantucket Island, MA, with her children, in a cottage built by the family. Sue remained in her North Canton, CT home, following the passing of Whitney in 2004, eventually moving to McLean in 2013.
Sue enjoyed gardening, knitting, cross-stitching samplers, playing bridge, and collecting antiques to fill her North Canton home. She was an avid reader, always with a long list of books to be read. She was an active member of Canton Center Congregational Church. She participated in numerous community activities including, the Prime Timers, the Stich ‘n Bitch group, the Madaket Ladies, a group of Nantucket Moms, known for their acronym MLBDLS (activities they regularly enjoyed together). She volunteered at the Canton Historical Museum and regularly participated in exercise classes at the Canton Senior Center.
Sue was predeceased by her two sisters, Barbara Lentz, and Donna Thompson. She is survived by her brother, Richard Lowe of Lakeview, AR. She is survived by her 5 children, Robert Jennison (wife Maryann), Richard Jennison, Thomas Jennison (wife Lucy), Anne LeMaitre (husband Dan), and Edward “Ted” Jennison (wife Jackie), as well as numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
The family is extremely grateful to the McLean community for the excellent care and compassion they demonstrated during Sue’s stay. Sue enjoyed the many activities that filled her days tremendously. “I just love it here”, she would say.
A private memorial celebration of Sue’s life with burial in the North Canton Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. To share memories or express condolences online, go to www.vincentfuneralhome.com.
