Obituary for Shirley C. Spunar (Smith)
Shirley C. (Smith) Spunar, 97, passed asway Monday, December 31, 2018 at Cherry Brook Health Care Center in Canton. She was born in Collinsville on September 18, 1921 to Leslie and Nina (Clark) Smith and resided in Canton all her life. She was a graduate of Canton High School, Class of 1940 and worked briefly at Travelers Insurance in Hartford prior to her marriage in 1942 to John Cables, father of her two children. Shortly thereafter, she worked at Aetna Life Insurance in Hartford until her retirement in 1976. In 1962, she married Stephen Spunar. He predeceased her in 1982.
After her retirement from Aetna, Shirley worked for Dr. Edward Diters in Canton and Nassau Furniture in Avon. She was very active in the Canton Senior Citizens for many years and proudly held the position of President. She was also a former member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Collinsville where she played the organ and taught Sunday School for several years.
Shirley is survived by her son, Gary Cables of Prattville, AL, daughter, Bonita (Bonnie) Eustace of Avon; grandchildren Richard Cables and Debra Baxley of AL, Robert Eustace of Granby and Todd Eustace of Simsbury; seven great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Louis of PA and Leslie of Canton, her daughter-in-law, Laura Cables of Prattville, AL and her son-in-law, Jay Eustace of Avon.
Graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 11th at 2:00 PM at South West Cemetery on Simonds Avenue in Canton. Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, Canton is in charge of arrangements.
