Obituary for John William Hayes
John William Hayes, 63, of West Simsbury, beloved husband of Jennifer (Lottering) Hayes, died Thursday, September 5, 2019 at home surrounded by his family. He was born October 4, 1955 in Cape Town, South Africa, son of the late George Edward and Laura (Tearnan) Hayes. He moved to Connecticut with his family from South Africa 21 years ago and lived in West Hartford for 5 years and in Simsbury for 16 years.
John worked for MassMutual, where he was a Systems Business Analyst. He was an active member at St. Catherine of Siena Church in West Simsbury, where he was a member of the choir.
John loved all sports and played semi-professional soccer for the Marist Soccer Club in Cape Town. John also coached Junior Travel Soccer for West Hartford for many years.
John was a member of the Ed Quigley Memorial Golf League. He was an ultra-marathon runner and also ran many marathons. He was a member of the Durbanville Running Club in South Africa. In addition to running, soccer and golf, John enjoyed singing, deep sea diving and spending time with his family.
John established the John Hayes Fund for H.O.P.E at Hartford Hospital Cancer Center to benefit patients undergoing cancer treatment.
In addition to his loving wife Jenny Hayes of 40 years, John is survived by his three children. His daughters, Wendy Nichols and her partner Jeremy Lee of Ellington and Claire Patrizz and her husband Michael of Coventry; his son, Craig Hayes of Simsbury; his siblings, Donald Hayes and wife June, Hazel Dentener, Joan Sayer and husband Gerry, Bernard Hayes, Laurie Venter and husband Mark and Cheryl Saunders and husband Ian; three grandchildren, Dylan Nichols, Tyler Lee and Tarryn Patrizz and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers George, Brian and Richard. His sisters Yvonne and Maureen.
There are no calling hours. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 13th at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 265 Stratton Brook Road in West Simsbury.
