Obituary for John Francis Donahue

John Francis Donahue, 83, of Simsbury, CT and Vero Beach, FL, beloved husband of Joyce (Endt) Donahue, died Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at St. Francis Hospital. He was born March 23, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Charles and Marie (Carr) Donahue and had lived in Simsbury for over 50 years. John served in the Army National Guard of New Jersey in the early 1960s. Mr. Donahue was the Chairman and CEO of HartRe and a Senior Vice President at The Hartford prior to his retirement after 44 years with the company. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena in West Simsbury, CT and enjoyed golf, tennis, poker and gardening. He also enjoyed jazz (frequenting clubs in his hometown of Philadelphia in his youth) and had artistic talents, particularly drawing. He was also known for his Irish wit.

In addition to his beloved wife of 59 years, he is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Donahue of Dingle, Ireland; his son, Bryan Donahue and his wife Lynda Brenckle of Breckenridge, Colorado; his grandchildren, Bayley Donahue and her husband Ryan Maxon, Malory Donahue and Griffin Donahue; his great grandchildren, Westin Maxon and Tristin Maxon; a brother, Paul Donahue and his wife Malee, sister-in-law Dolores Gardella-Hyde as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Doris, Jane, Alice, Patricia, Liz, Eleanor, Kay and Dusty and a brother, Charles.
