Obituary for Anita Gray

ANITA M. GRAY
1926 - 2020

Anita M. (Ruby) Gray of Seabury Active Life Plan Community, Bloomfield, CT died on July 25, 2020 at age 93. Predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Robert J. Gray, she leaves her daughters, Darcy Gray (Richard Starkel) of Tariffville, CT, and Ericka Gray (Ian Gosling) of Arlington, MA. Raised and educated in New Cumberland, PA, she lived in York, PA for most of her life. Bucking the social conventions of the time when women didn’t work outside the home, she was a career newspaper reporter, first with the Harrisburg Patriot News, and later for the York Dispatch, from which she retired after 27 years.

Her adventurous spirit led her to convince her husband to travel the world with her, including to Antarctica, Africa, and the Arctic regions (several times each) to see wildlife in its natural habitat. She instilled her love of travel and animals in both her daughters, each of whom had the opportunity to accompany her on her world travel adventures. Her adventures often involved traveling in 4x4’s and tundra buggies, wet landings by zodiacs, helicopter landings on ice floes, with an occasional windjammer cruise thrown in.

After her move to Connecticut seven years ago, she made it clear that she missed eating York County, PA food (the best in the world, according to her) and tending to her prizewinning roses. We are sure that wherever she is now, she is correcting people’s grammar, insisting that her hamburger has onions mixed in rather than on top, and being surrounded by her beloved dogs!

There will be no memorial service due to the pandemic and because, as usual, she had the last word and outlived her contemporaries. Her ashes will be interred next to her husband’s at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, PA. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, 103 Vision Way, Bloomfield, CT 06002, or online at www.fidelco.org .
