Obituary for Jean F. Sullivan (Furey)

Jean Furey Sullivan, of Avon, wife of the late James D. Sullivan, died Wednesday, December 30, 2020 peacefully at her home. She was born in New Britain, daughter of the late John S. and Grace (Smith) Furey and had lived in Wethersfield, West Simsbury and Bloomfield prior to moving to Avon 26 years ago. She was a graduate of Western Connecticut State College, Class of 1951, where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Education and went on to teach for many years. During her retirement she taught English as a Second Language, Citizenship, and various Adult Education programs in the area. Many of her students went on to earn their GED and further their education as a result of her inspiration.

She was a member of the CT Valley Calligraphers, the CT Women’s Golf Association, Southern New England Golf Association, Simsbury Farms Women’s Golf Association and a charter member of Hopmeadow Country Club. In addition to golf, Jean enjoyed her cats, paddle tennis, her Mini Cooper, the beach, gardening, and travel. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting people, no one was ever a stranger for very long and all were welcome into her home.

She is survived by her son, Jim Sullivan and wife Heather of Tampa, FL; her daughters, Beth Healey and husband Arthur of Clinton, Kathleen Gleason of Orford, NH, Maureen Jacobs and husband Kenny of Granby; her grandchildren, Meghan, Hannah, Sarah, Kelly, Anna, Sophie, Jamie, Molly, Tommy, Matthew, Lucy; her only great grandchild, Abigail Paige, and many nieces and nephews.

At this time, services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the American Cancer Society. The Vincent Funeral Home of Canton is caring for the arrangements. Please visit Jean’s “Book of Memories” at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes.
