Obituary for Peter Grant Carey

Peter Grant Carey passed away peacefully at home, in Simsbury, on May 8, 2021 from complications of Frontotemporal Degeneration, surrounded and comforted by his wife of 53 years, Patricia, and their loving family. Born on September 13, 1942 in Chicago, IL to Thomas G. and Margaret (Grant) Carey, the family moved to Fairview Park, Ohio in his early childhood. Peter was a graduate of Campion, a Jesuit boarding school in Praire Du Chien, WI in 1960 and John Carroll University, University Heights Ohio in 1964. Upon graduation he embarked on a 40 year insurance career joining Connecticut Mutual Ins. Co. in Cleveland, Ohio in 1965. His career included honors and awards recognized as an Agent, Master, NSAA, Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table, GMAC-Master Agency Award, National Agency Award, and Career Agency Development Award. Peter was a General Agent in Akron, Ohio, New Jersey, and Hartford CT as well as Vice President of CML Agency Development in their home office. Peter moved his family from Madison, NJ to Simsbury, CT in 1979. He retired with Mass Mutual as General Agent in 2005. His professional education included Tuck School Executive Program -Dartmouth College and CLU from American College in PA of which he is a benefactor. Peter also was an author and guest speaker for LIMRA and has membership in NALU.

Having made their home in Simsbury, he was an active member and loyal parishioner of St. Mary's Parish. He was a CCD teacher and member of the original Finance Committee, the St. Mary's Carnival and well as several campaigns and development for the school and church.

An avid golfer, Peter was a 41 year member of Hopmeadow Country Club. He served on the Board of Directors and then served a 3 year term as President. Active in the Hartford community, Peter served as the Chairman of the Bushnell Park Carousel Society, Board of United Way, Sponsor of CML- Basketball Classic, Chair of Run for Life, as well as participated in Fidelco Charity Bike Races and participated in the biking portion of multiple charity Triathlons.

As a car enthusiast, Peter owned many models of Corvettes, attended Formula I races and rarely missed an Indy 500. Peter also found enjoyment in his passion for skiing with his family, friends, and grandchildren.

Peter joined the Avery Heights Parent Corporation Board in 1987 and in 2001 was named Chairman of the Board through 2007. He has served as the President of the Board of the Trustees for the Foundation for the Advancement of Catholic Schools (FACS) which has distributed scholarships to students in the Hartford Archdiocese and holds the annual Archbishop's St. Patrick's Day Breakfast fundraiser. As a recipient of the Help and Hope Award his work with Catholic Charities was recognized. Peter was a Corporator of St. Francis Hospital - Trinity Health and a member of the Valencia Society and over a 40 year dedicated Retreatant and financial Advisor to the Passionist Community of the Holy Family Retreat Center and a member of their Flynn Heritage Society. With his wife Patricia, they are benefactors of the Hartford Symphony, Hartford Choral and the Talcott Mountain Music Festival.

Peter loved being with his family which brought him boundless joy. He lit up the room with his smile, sparkling blue eyes and contagious laughter. He was an impeccable dresser, a true gentlemen and a devoted family man who married the love of his life. His faith, love and humor lives on in all the lives he touched.

Peter leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia (Kelly) Carey and their four children; Peter and wife Abby (George) of NYC and their children Ava, Vivian and James; Matthew Carey and wife Kelley Anne (Smith) of Glastonbury and their children Margaret, Fiona and Gerard Patrick; Ryan Carey and wife Amy (Torok) of Vienna, Austria and their sons Grant and Ethan; Shannon Matyczyk and husband Stephen of Simsbury and their children Jackson, Caroline and Patrick. He is also survived by his sister Maggi (Carey) Mooney and her husband Bob and his brother Thomas (Tim) Carey and his wife Maureen of Ohio and his cousin James Grant and his wife Cheryl of Farmington, CT. As well as sisters in law Kate Bush (Nick), Eileen Barry, Mary Kelly (Scott Lazarus), Meg Pampush (Dave) and brother-in-law Joseph Kelly and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas G. and Margaret (Grant) Carey and his sister Mary Alice.

The family would like to thank the McLean Hospice nurses and aides and his live-in caregivers for the compassionate care they provided throughout Peter’s illness.

Peter’s family will receive friends during a walkthrough visitation at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury on Sunday, May 16th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 17th at St. Mary’s Church, 942 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Burial will follow in Simsbury Cemetery.
