Obituary for Arthur Bates
Arthur L. Bates, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2021; Art was predeceased last August by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jane. He is survived by his children Elaine (Bates) and Jim Jones of Cromwell, CT, Jim and Claudia of Berryville, VA, and Ken and Mara of Chesapeake, VA along with his 3 grandchildren McKenna, Kaden and Makayda. Close family also includes his brother Al and his wife Barbara of Chelmsford, MA.
Born in Braddock, PA, Art grew up in Wayne, PA where he was an active member of the Paoli 1 Boy Scout Troop and a member of the Radnor High School band. He graduated from Radnor High in 1952 and was off to Penn State.
Art graduated from the Pennsylvania State University in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. While at Penn State he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, the Marching and Concert Blue Bands, and the Phi Mu Alpha & Alpha Phi Omega fraternities. While at Penn State, he met his soulmate Mary Jane (Hartzell) Bates.
Art and Jane moved to Connecticut following graduation from Penn State, as he began a career as an Analytical and Systems Design Engineer in the Hamilton Standard Division of the United Aircraft Corporation (later United Technologies). He was involved in the analysis and design of the controls for a wide range of projects at Hamilton Standard including jet engine systems, which are still used today in 737 through 777 series airliners.
Art was a member of First Church of Christ, Simsbury for 31 years where he was a member of the Chancel Choir. He was also a past president of the Naval Academy Parents Club of Connecticut. Following retirement, he moved to Wethersfield, CT and became a member of the Chancel Choir at Church of Christ, Congregational, Newington, CT. In 2007, Art and Jane moved to Chesapeake, VA where he was a member of the Chancel Choir at Great Bridge Presbyterian Church. His life-long passions included music, literature, travel, and puns.
A burial service will be held in Simsbury Cemetery, 16 Plank Hill Road at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 19th. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
