Obituary for William R. Sylvester

William Robert Sylvester passed away in his home in Farmington, Connecticut, at the age of 93 on Wednesday, September 15th, 2021. He was a loving, caring and concerned husband, father and grandfather. To his colleagues and friends, he was a well-known boiler engineer employed for thirty-eight years by Combustion Engineering, Inc., mostly in Windsor, Connecticut. Bill was born June Fourteenth, 1928, in Bronx, New York to William and Constance Sylvester. He served in the U.S. Army as a private and supply clerk from September 1946 to January 1948, stationed in Tokushima, Japan for thirteen months.

Bill received his B.M.E degree in 1952 from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and began his career with Combustion in New York, becoming a recognized expert in material-related service problems in boilers. Throughout his career, he served in several industry and code-related organizations and committees on boiler materials such as the American Society for the Testing and Materials (ASTM).

On July Second, 1955, Bill married Marta Marie Manfredi. They raised two sons, Paul and Chris, and two daughters, Carol and Joan. The family were long-time residents of Avon, Connecticut, and Bill was an avid supporter of the Avon Public Library. He was known to his family, friends and colleagues for his generous nature, curious mind and honest opinions.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife Marta and his parents William and Constance. He is survived by his four children, Paul, Carol, Chris, and Joan, and his brother Richard.

Burial was at the State of Connecticut Veteran's Cemetery in Middletown.
