Obituary for MaryAnn Pittala

MaryAnn Pittala, 87, of Windsor Locks, CT, wife of the late Peter J. Pittala, died Friday, March 18, 2022 at McLean in Simsbury, CT. Before moving to CT in 2016, she lived in Orangeburg, NY and later, Suffern, NY for most of her adult life.

She was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 12, 1934 to Angelo and Ida (Genco) Matassa. MaryAnn was a school secretary in the Ramapo Central School District for over twenty years prior to her retirement. Her career at Ramapo was shared with many cherished colleagues, as well as the children that she enjoyed interacting with each day. MaryAnn had great pride in her Italian heritage which she celebrated by thoroughly enjoying good Italian food, especially on Sunday afternoons surrounded by her family and friends on Edgewood Drive in Orangeburg. She enjoyed traveling and exploring new places in her later years with her long-term partner Stanley - most memorably to Italy and California, as well as embarking on cruises with friends. She loved playing the slots on many of her casino trips and buying scratch off tickets. MaryAnn frequented the theater which included many trips to Broadway and several to Connecticut to see her granddaughters in local school productions. She adored music (most notably Frank Sinatra, Vic Damone and Tony Bennett) and had many fond memories of seeing these artists in person. Most of all, MaryAnn embraced time spent with her family and loved ones, especially her granddaughters who held a special place in her heart. She was truly dedicated to the people she loved.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Beach and husband Dan Barnhart of Collinsville, CT; her granddaughters, Julia Beach of Tariffville, CT and Joanna Beach of Davidson, NC; her daughter-in-law Anna Pittala; her ex daughter-in-law Deborah Bonsack; her step grandchildren, Colleen Barnhart of Canton, CT and Jesse Barnhart and wife Shelby Barnhart of Canton, CT and her step great grandchildren, James, Charlotte and Wren Barnhart of Canton, CT. In addition to her husband and parents, MaryAnn was predeceased by her beloved son Jack Pittala, her brother Paul Matassa and two companions, Stanley Ederheimer of 20 years and Alan Ryan of 5 years.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 30th at Sacred Heart Church, 129 Lafayette Avenue in Suffern, NY where she was a parishioner for many years. Burial will follow in Ascension Cemetery in Airmont, NY. Donations in her memory may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation . The Vincent Funeral Home of Canton, CT is caring for the arrangements.
