Obituary for Shirley Anne Martin

Shirley Anne Blair Martin, 95 of Ledyard died on June 14, 2022 at the Mclean Home in Simsbury after a brief illness. Mrs. Martin was born May 13, 1927 in Hartford the daughter of late Edna Earle Blair and Joseph Henry Blair. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from George Washington University in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. Following her graduation she went to work at the National Research Council in Washington D.C. On June 3, 1949 Mrs. Martin Married William L. Martin III (U.S.N) (deceased) of Alexandria VA.

For the next thirty one years the Martins moved about the county as William’s Navy assignments required including Massachusetts, Virginia, New Hampshire, Washington State and then Connecticut. Together they were a big part of the Navy’s Nuclear Submarine Division and attended countless submarine commissions. She was an avid reader, writer enjoyed local history and researching her family’s genealogy. After retirement they settled in Ledyard. Mrs. Martin served many years on the local Submarine Force Officers Wives Club and was an advisor to the chapter at the Submarine Base in Groton. She was also a member of many churches including the St. Andrews Presbyterian in Groton and the Ledyard Congressional Church in Ledyard. The Martins took numerous vacations all over the US and Canada and took photos and documented every place they went and stayed. They loved visiting friends and family all over the country.

Mrs. Martin is survived by her cousins Bonnie Aldrich of Simsbury, Burton Aldrich and his wife Colette of Ellington, Brenden Aldrich and his wife Lynn of Simsbury. The Family would also like to thank the Mclean Home/Hospice Care for their kindness, companionate and loving care they provided especially Arline and Judith.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service is planned for June 25, 2022 at 10AM at the Ledyard Congressional Church, 722 Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard CT 06339. Memorial Donations may be made to the Ledyard Congressional Church or Mclean Home and Hospice Care, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070.
