Obituary for Julia Charest

On Tuesday, September 27, 2022 Julia Charest (née Fogg) passed peacefully beside her husband at home in New Hartford, CT. Born July 17, 1957 to the late LaVerne (Flenker) and Forrest Fogg, Julia grew up in Tipton, Iowa before attending college at St. Ambrose University. Pursuing a career in retail loss prevention, Julia moved to Connecticut where she worked for New York & Company and J.Crew before retiring.

A loving wife, Mémère, and friend, Julia leaves on Earth her husband Dan Charest, cherished bonus-children Brendan (Amy) Charest and Brigitte Charest (Chris Burd), along with four bonus grandchildren, two brothers Arthur and Joseph Fogg of Tipton, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Julia embraced life with a vivacious spirit and encouraged others to do the same, always finding a way to make the best of any situation. This zest for life was infused into her work as a certified spin instructor at the YMCA in Wallingford and Winsted, CT, and Yale University. Her classes filled with riders that became friends and led to cycling adventures from riding across Iowa to the annual Closer to Free rides for Smilow Cancer Hospital.

In her battle with metastatic breast cancer, Julia was a participant in Phase I clinical trials for treatment, contributing to the science that will someday lead to a cure. Julia was strong, brave, and a hero to many. The family sincerely thanks the entire Smilow Hospital Breast Cancer Team for over 15 years of care and dedication. Gratitude is also extended to the Hartford HealthCare Hospice team for their utmost care and genuine compassion.

Family and friends are invited to gather at The Raymond Family Farm in New Hartford, CT on Sunday, October 16, 2022, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A memorial ceremony celebrating Julia’s life will be held at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her honor to Smilow Hospital Closer to Free
