Obituary for Julia Wheeler

Julia (Sullivan) Wheeler, 92, of Simsbury, wife of the late Lloyd A. Wheeler sadly passed away on November 25, 2022. She was born in the Bronx, NY to Daniel Francis and Anna (O’Toole) Sullivan. Julia will be so dearly missed!

She leaves behind her daughter Susan Kelleher (Kevin) of Farmington; her sons Matthew Wheeler(Kari) of Nashville, and Jonathan Wheeler (Katherine) of Newtown; her five grandsons, Shaun Kelleher(Becky), Scott Kelleher (Amela), Matthew Wheeler (Shawnna), Timothy Wheeler (Krysta) and Michael Wheeler; and her great granddaughters, Hyla Wheeler, Shea and Hailee Kelleher.

Before getting married Julia worked at Doubleday and Company in NYC. She majored in English and had landed her dream job in publishing. In 1953, while employed at Doubleday, Mademoiselle Magazine did a “Scoop of the Month” about Julia. She was photographed in attractive clothes that would take her from “nine to five”. Her beauty radiated from every page. She was stunning! She carried herself with that beauty, elegance and grace her whole life.

Julia, Judy, Mom, Nana, GNana was a caring person. She was never one to complain, acting with dignity through thick and thin. She was always interested in what her children, their children and her children’s children were doing. The bright light that shone in her eyes came from her three great granddaughters. She was not able to see them often in person, but photos and videos kept her connected. She was very well read and perused her newspaper daily. She enjoyed crossword puzzles immensely (NYTimes especially!) Her Scrabble skills were second to none. The books that seemed to interest her most were generally medical in nature, always wanting to be well versed in the state of her person. Julia was a proficient knitter, making beautiful afghans for everyone in the family. Simple pleasures meant a lot to her. Watching the birds on her feeder connected her to nature. She’d wile away the hours with old movies on TMC while drinking seltzer, enjoying her dark chocolate and occasional slice of banana bread. NYC Broadway shows were one of the passions that she and her daughter shared. They went to dozens of shows enjoying the sights, sounds and tastes of her beloved city. Though Julia raised her family in Detroit, Chicago, New Jersey and Connecticut she was always a New Yorker at heart! Julia will be remembered as one classy lady!

Private burial will be held at the Simsbury Cemetery on Monday December 5, 2022. Please remember to let your elder family members know how much they mean to you and always try your best to be an advocate for their well being. Thank you to those who truly cared for Julia.

The Vincent Funeral Home of Simsbury is caring for the arrangements. Please visit Julia’s Book of Memories at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes.
