Obituary for Margery Bynoe

Margery Joyce Bynoe died the day after her 95th birthday, lovingly cared for by the staff at McLean Care and her daughter and son-in-law Margery and Tobey Winters of Simsbury.

Margery lived a full and happy life. Born in Toronto in 1927 to William and Isabel Freeman, she was educated at St Clements School for Girls. She met her beloved husband Robert when he was in training as a pilot with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan for the Royal Air Force during WW2. Following the war, they married in Portland, Maine in 1948 and made their first home in Toronto where they had their son Bruce (Calgary, Alberta) and twin daughters Margery and Elizabeth (Swanage, England). Robert’s work soon took the young family to Port-of-Spain, Trinidad where Margery tackled the challenges of tropical life with her characteristic vigor and joie-de-vivre. Work thereafter took the family back to Toronto, then to Vancouver, Calgary, and Chagrin Falls, Ohio where they lived for forty years. In each place, Margery created a beautiful home, became very involved with the community and made many friends. She was an elegant and generous hostess and Margery and Robert’s parties were renowned. Margery also enjoyed her work as a docent at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens for many years. She and Robert enjoyed numerous trips to UK and Europe as well as the winter months spent in Barbados, Robert’s homeland.

Margery and Robert relocated to Simsbury in 2011. Robert died in 2016. They leave their children and spouses: Bruce Bynoe, Margery and Tobey Winters, Elizabeth and Crispin Read Wilson; beloved grandchildren and their partners: Sara Bynoe, Vancouver; David Bynoe and Janet Mader, Vancouver; Peter and Darya Clarke, Brooklyn; Tim Clarke, Stockholm; Benjamin Winters and Luwen Mai, Boston; Nicholas and Mallory Winters, Calgary; her great-granddaughters Leyla and Ava Clarke, Brooklyn; and her special Ohio family, Francie and David Parsons.

Margery’s interest in others and in her family was a vital part of her character to the very end. We will miss her humor, wisdom, constant love and support. We are thankful to have had her in our lives for so long. We are also very grateful for the exceptional care all the McLean staff gave our mother and grandmother. We especially would like to thank Lucille, Alan, Holly, and Pam.

The family will take Margery’s ashes to Barbados to be interred next to Robert’s in the Barbados Military Cemetery in Bridgetown. Rest in peace, lovely lady.
