Obituary for John Francis Murphy Jr.

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. John Francis Murphy, Jr. announces his death on Sunday, June 25, 2023. John was preceded in death by his parents: John and Norma Murphy; and left behind his wife of 41 years, Mary, his two children, John Francis Murphy III, J.D. (Christina), and Kathleen Marie Hershon, M.D. (Charles), and two grandsons, Jack, and Ollie; and his four siblings: Linda Murphy, Molly Murphy, Bill Murphy (Robin), and Patty Bowman (Tom).

John was born on March 14, 1952, in Buffalo, New York and grew up in a loving family in Irondequoit, NY and then Webster, NY. John graduated from R.L. Thomas High School in 1970, the University of Rochester in 1974 and the University of Kansas Medical School in 1982. He finished his Obstetrics/Gynecology residency at the University of Rochester in 1987.

John was an amazing person. He met the world with a wide smile, a firm handshake, optimism, and kindness. John felt passionate about his family, his calling to be a doctor, his friends, and the KU Jayhawk men’s basketball team. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and brother, a caring physician, a loyal friend, and an ardent fan.

John believed that he had a calling to be a doctor and practiced medicine in Kansas over 25 years. Through the years, many of his patients wrote thank you notes for his outstanding care. One of his patients even wrote an essay about him that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association - “Thank you, for treating me as a whole person, for remembering my name, for acknowledging my dreams, for ‘normalizing’ my fears, for treating me with compassion. You gave me the dignity to leave with confidence and return with courage.” Not only his patients, but also we who knew and loved him can echo these sentiments. To know John was to be graced with his class, sense of humor, and kindness. He was a wonderful storyteller.

Even after his stroke in 2010 and the dementia that followed, causing Mary and him to move to Connecticut to be closer to his children and grandchildren, John was able with his amazing smile and goodness to make new friends. He met this new challenge with courage and grace.

John’s Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 265 Stratton Brook Road in West Simsbury. There will be a reception to follow.

Later, a memorial service will take place in Kansas to inter his ashes.

Flowers may be sent to the Vincent Funeral Home at 880 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, CT 06070. Instead of flowers, we humbly recommend a contribution to the Humane Society. John was a lifelong lover of animals and his dog, Penny, will greatly miss him.
