Obituary for Evelyn Caranchini

Evelyn “Evie” Caranchini, 76, formerly of East Granby, CT, beloved wife of Steven Caranchini, passed away at McLean Home in Simsbury on Saturday, June 24, 2023. Born in Philadelphia, daughter of the late Rolland H. Smith and Clarissa (Bucklin) Smith, she graduated from Marple Newtown High School, Class of 1964. Evie earned her Bachelor’s degree from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA with Majors in Mathematics and Economics. Upon graduation in 1968, she arrived in Hartford to work as an Actuarial Technician at the then little Aetna. Later she moved to the big Aetna where she had a rewarding career in Life Insurance Marketing. Evie met her husband Steve while both were employed by the Aetna, although they actually met at a dance at the former Hotel America. While working at Aetna, Evie earned her FLMI “with distinction” in Life Insurance Investments.

Later on, and into her late thirties, Evie began working as a volunteer at different libraries in the Farmington Valley. After almost 20 years of success in the life insurance business and becoming the mother of her only child Wendy, Evie found her real passion and the career path that led her to obtaining her Master of Library Science degree from Southern Connecticut State university in 1991. Evie as a lifetime avid reader followed the path that led her to her dream job of becoming a Children’s Librarian. Evie known by many young readers as “Mrs. C” worked for many years as the Children’s Librarian at the Granby Public Library. She worked hard to make reading fun for many children.

Evie especially enjoyed sharing on display with other libraries her extensive Sesame Street collection. Other interests included extensive travel, time at the beach and taking long walks with her many friends. Evie and Steve were avid UCONN Women’s Basketball fans, both having attended 7 Final Fours together.

Evie is survived by her husband Steven and daughter Wendy, her sister Mitzi Kielar and husband Jerry along with nieces and nephews Jennifer Kielar Miller, Jeffrey Kielar, Donald Stevens, Evelyn Stevens O’Brien and several grand nieces and nephews. Sister Phyllis Stevens predeceased her in 2020.

Her family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at McLean, especially the Atwater Memory Care Neighborhood.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 17th at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, closing with a celebration of her life at noon. Burial will follow in Simsbury Cemetery. Please visit Evie’s Book of Memories at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes.
