Obituary for Alfred J. Hunt

Alfred James Hunt, 94, of Granby, husband of the late Margaret (Dowd) Hunt, died Monday, July 17, 2023 at Valerie Manor in Torrington. He was born October 11, 1928 in Simsbury, son of the late Thomas A. and Bertha (Vincent) Hunt and had lived in Simsbury for 72 years prior to moving to Granby. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. having served in the Korean War. Mr. Hunt had a long career with the Town of Simsbury and Salter’s Express School Buses. He was the shop foreman at this trucking and busing company. He started driving a bus while he was still a student at Simsbury High School and spent his entire career driving and maintaining them, ensuring the safety of the town’s children. He retired from Salter’s after 47 years of service. In June 1998, Al was recognized as the Connecticut School Transportation Safety Council’s Safety Professional of the Year. He was also honored as Simsbury’s Hometown Hero and was an honorary member of the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Department. Al was a member of the VFW Simsbury and enjoyed gardening, bowling and horseshoes.

He is survived by his two sons, Alan Hunt of Northampton, MA and Kenneth Hunt and his wife Jennifer of Monroe; two daughters, Katherine Carey and husband Peter of Winsted and Cheryl Ripley and partner Steven of Simsbury; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Shannon, Heather, Zachary Amanda, Erin, Miles and Christopher and several great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his partner of 20 years Martha Cole and by his brother Thomas.

The family would like to thank the staff at Valerie Manor for the compassionate care they gave to Al.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 26th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 27 th. Burial with military honors will follow in Simsbury Cemetery.
