Norman Joseph Smith, Jr., 82, of Simsbury, died Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at McLean in Simsbury. He was born February 26, 1941 in Waterbury, son of the late Norman Joseph Smith, Sr. and Julia (Hutchinson) Smith and had lived in Granby for 54 years prior to moving to Simsbury last year. He was a graduate of Central Connecticut State University, Class of 1971, having received his Masters Degree. Mr. Smith was an Elementary School Teacher in the Granby School System for many years prior to his retirement. Norm was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Church in Simsbury and was a happy member of The Coffee Club with his closest friends, including Jerry Ledger, Mick McGuinness, Larry Laureno and Lonnie O’Meara. He enjoyed spending time outdoors kayaking, horseback riding and sailing, traveling and boat building, was an avid reader and absolutely loved all things Irish.

He leaves his siblings, Katherine Ernst of Block Island, RI, Robert Smith and wife Maureen of Pawcatuck, Jan Smith of Lansdale, PA and Jill Federico and husband John of Merrimack, NH; 7 nieces and nephews and 4 grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Alvin Ernst.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 8th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 9 th at St. Mary’s Church, 942 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Burial will follow in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Tariffville. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church, P.O.
