Obituary for Ida Maillet (Poirier)

Ida Poirier Maillet, 94, of Avon and Bouctouche, New Brunswick, Canada, died Friday, March 22, 2024 at Apple Rehab in Avon. She was born August 13, 1929 in Lynn, Massachusetts and raised in Dieppe, N.B. She was the daughter of the late Tilmon and Agnes (LeBlanc) Poirier. Ida was the wife of Oscar Maillet of Avon whom she married on September 14, 1948 in Dieppe and shortly thereafter, relocated to Hartford. They moved to Avon in 1955. Ida lived for her family and St. Ann's Church in Avon, where she was a long time communicant and was one of the first Ministers of the Holy Eucharist. Ida donated much of her time to her parish and was in charge of funeral receptions at St. Ann. She also was a member of their Women's Guild (having served a term as president) a member and past president of the Legion de Marie. She was a member of the Avon Senior Citizens Club, a member of LaRencontre and attended many retreats at the Immaculate Retreat House in Willimantic. She volunteered at St. Francis Hospital for over ten years, donated her time to the Avon Health Center and to the American Home front. Ida worked at Avon Convalescent Home for eight years. She enjoyed spending her summers in Bouctouche.

Ida is survived by her son Ronald Maillet and his wife Christina of Canton; daughter Francine Ahrens of Winsted; six grandchildren who knew her as Grandma and Memere, May (Ahrens) Friday, Benjamin Ahrens, Leonard Maillet, Paul Maillet, Willie Ahrens and Raquel Lonabaugh; several great grandchildren; a sister, Cecile Scheidel of Burlington, daughter-in-law Karen Maillet of Simsbury and 18 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Oscar Maillet, a son, Claude Maillet, her daughter, Janice Lonabaugh and her husband William, four brothers, Jules Poirier, Raymond Poirier, Paul Poirier and Edgar Poirier; a sister Jeanne Maillet and husband Alcide, son-in-law, John Ahrens and brother-in-law, Jack Scheidel.

Friends may call at Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, Canton between the hours of 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial, 10:00 AM at the Church of St. Ann, 289 Arch Road in Avon.
