Obituary for Barbara Griffin

Barbara M. Griffin, a vibrant soul born on February 2, 1935, in the heart of the Bronx, bid her final farewell on April 9, 2024 at the age of 89. She was a woman whose essence encapsulated the very spirit of New York City – a blend of resilience, elegance, and unyielding charm.

Throughout her life, Barbara remained steadfastly connected to her roots, carrying with her the indomitable spirit of the city that never sleeps. Her love for fashion, exquisite jewelry, and an innate sense of fabulousness were emblematic of her personality, earning her the title of the "Cool Aunt" among her 26 nieces and nephews.

Barbara's commitment to her community was unwavering. She was a beacon of light in Simsbury, Connecticut, where she dedicated her time and efforts to various organizations, including the Simsbury Women's Club, Simsbury Republican Women, McLean Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, and St. Mary's Church. Most notably, she was named a Simsbury Home Town Hero in June of 2007. Her involvement was not merely a duty but a reflection of her genuine care and compassion for those around her.

Prior to her retirement in 1991, Barbara graced the corridors of Lincoln National Insurance Company, where she served with distinction in Human Resources. Her professionalism and warmth endeared her to colleagues and clients alike, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was also one of the fastest typists in the world, clocking in at 220 words a minute, faster than an IBM Selectric could go!

Beyond her professional accomplishments and community endeavors, Barbara found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether she was meticulously crafting needlepoint masterpieces, winning at bridge, scrabble or bingo, sharing laughter with loved ones, and especially, savoring a well-deserved martini, she embraced each moment with zest and grace.

Barbara's magnetic personality touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and boundless love. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing paths with her during her remarkable journey through life. She is predeceased by the absolute love of her life, Robert K. Griffin husband of 65 years, and her son, Robert K. Griffin, Jr. She leaves her daughter, Tracey Griffin Himmel of Chapel Hill, NC and three grandchildren, John, Liam and Claire, as well as her beloved nieces and nephews. Barbara and Bob welcomed their nephew Chris into their life as a small boy when his mother was unable to care for him and this left an indelible bond. The family wants to extend our heartfelt thanks to the amazing, loving and caring staff at McLean Home where she spent her last days.

Visitation will be held at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury on Friday, April 19th from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church, 942 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury with Burial in Simsbury Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to McLean, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070. Please visit Barbara's Book of Memories at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes.
