John Skermer Earwaker, Jr.
John Skermer Earwaker, Jr., 90, of Simsbury, beloved husband of Louise (Smith) Earwaker, died Saturday, December 24, 2011 at McLean in Simsbury. He was born July 27, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late John Skermer Earwaker, Sr. and Norma (Garrett) Earwaker and had lived in Camillus, NY and Havertown, PA prior to moving to Simsbury in 1969. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the Pacific Theater in World War II. During the Korean War he was the Commander of Mobile Logistics, Unit Four, in Sasebo, Japan. John was a Professor of Naval Science at Villanova University and had retired from the U.S. Navy as Commander in the 1960’s. John was a graduate of Westchester University having received his Bachelors Degree in Education and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania having received his Masters Degree in Guidance Counseling. Mr. Earwaker was a Vice President at the Travelers Insurance Company for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Chartered Life Underwriters, committee member of NASD, former member of LIMRA, a member of the Simsbury Historical Society and was a former Commissioner of the Simsbury Housing Authority. John was an active member of the First Church of Christ in Simsbury having served on several boards and was an active Boy Scout of America Leader while living in Camillus, NY. John enjoyed fishing and golf. Besides his loving wife of 66 years, he is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law, John S. Earwaker, III and wife Tonya of Springfield, VA, George F. Earwaker and wife Karen of Falls Church, VA and Bruce G. Earwaker and wife Mary of South Windsor; three granddaughters, Alyssa, Amy and Andie Earwaker; brother-in-law, Paul J. Hellberg and his wife Kathleen; sister-in-law, Jean Smith and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Jean (Earwaker) Hellberg. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be celebrated Thursday, December 29th, 10:00 AM at the First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury with the Reverend Jonathan Morgan officiating. Burial will be private.
