He was born July 18, 1925 in Boston, MA, son of the late John Andrew and Lois Eleanor (Evans) Benham and had lived in North Canton and West Hartford prior to moving to Simsbury. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College, Class of 1949, and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Economics. John was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy in 1943-44. He was assigned to the USS Henry A. Wiley destroyer, where he served as a sonar man (“ping Jockey”) in anti-submarine warfare. He also sang in the SLOCO Choraliers, the Hartford Chorale, Waterbury Chorale and several church choirs. He was a member of the Universalist Church of West Hartford and sang in the choir for 25 years. He was an avid reader, especially about World War ll.
