Dagny A. Hultgreen, 96, of Greenwich, died on October 4, 2008 at the Governor’s House in Simsbury. She lived independently in her home of 49 years until being hospitalized in late July with pneumonia, COPD and lung cancer. She was born in Oslo, Norway in 1912, married Odd Hultgreen in 1934 and had three children, Tor, Dag and Dagny, who lived in Drammen, Norway until they sailed past the Statue of Liberty on their grandfather’s freighter, and immigrated to Greenwich in 1953. Past experiences included spending a year in Africa in 1931 with her uncle who built railroads, living through the German occupation in Norway during World War II, skiing and hiking in the mountains of Norway, spending summers with family and friends in her cottage on the hill by the fiord, travels through Europe, Canada, the U.S. and Caribbean, duplicate bridge tournaments, tennis at the club, and elegant balls at the Scandinavian American Foundation in New York. A graduate of the Art Academy of Oslo, she was a talented artist and long time member of the Greenwich Art Society, where her oil paintings won many awards. Widowed in 1966, she lived stoically, proudly and independently in her house on the lake in Milbrook, as long as she could, painting every day until the end. She is predeceased by her husband Odd, son Dag (Burlington, VT- 1994) and granddaughter Kara Hultgreen (Navy pilot in San Diego-1994) and survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tor and Sue Hultgreen of Parrish, FL; daughter and son-in-law Dagny H. and Harrison R. Griswold of Simsbury; four granddaughters Heidi Griswold of VT, Becky Griswold (college student in RI), Kirsten Hultgreen of Studio City, CA and Dagny Hultgreen Dubelko and her husband Michael and three great granddaughters Skylar, Paige and Taylor Dubelko, all of Beverly Hills, CA. A memorial gathering will be held at The Gables, 20 Devonwood Drive, Farmington on Saturday October 25th, where friends may stop in between noon and 5:00 p.m. to meet family and view some of her best paintings displayed in the apartment which had been set up for her.
