I had the honor of serving with Fred at the USMLM. We took a vacation together in 1954 and went to Copenhagen. It was cold and wet! After three days we went to American Express and signed up for a tour to Lugano. On the train, Fred saw this incredible looking Danish girl but was too shy to speak. So I went and asked if I could introduce her to my shy friend. Fred never got to Lugano but stayed with his new friend in the Riviera, then went home with her to Denmark. He didn't meet me to go back to the Mission in time. So he was AWOL. He did call the Mission and was so liked that the head of the Mission sent paperwork to get Fred back without getting arrested. No one ever knew that Fred was AWOL and, in later years, Fred and his wife became friends with the girl.
Fred was a great guy and I thoroughly enjoyed our time together.
